@HollandSpeedway • @rocmodifieds • HOLLAND, NY... Orchard Park, NY's Patrick Emerling was victorious in the Race of Champions (RoC) Modified Tour feature event in their annual visit to the Holland Motorsports Complex on Saturday evening.
The race was called completed on lap 97 due to time constraints. Third generation driver Jimmy Zacharias from Candor, NY earned his second Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modified feature of the 2015 season. Mark Hoch from West Seneca, NY earned the win in the Bank of Holland Chargers. Timmy Catalano from Ontario, NY picked up his first feature win on the season in the 4 Cylinder Hornets. Kyle Hutchinson from East Aurora, NY would earn his first feature win of 2015 in the Jerry Gradl Motors NYPA TQ Midgets.
"The Hotshoe" Chuck Hossfeld and tour regular Brian DeFebo shared the front row for the RoC 100 with Hossfeld showing the way over DeFebo with TJ Potrzebowski in third. The first caution came out on lap one as Chris Risdale had hard contact with the front stretch wall. Tyler Rypkema and Mike Leaty made visits to the pits with both being able to come back onto the speedway. The early restart would see Hossfeld back into the lead as Tony Hanbury and Patrick Emerling racing their way into the top five. Hossfeld, DeFebo and Potrzebowski started to pull away from Hanbury and Emerling. Mike Leaty would pull out of action early on after suffering a broken axel on his Leaty Autosport number 25. Entering the race, Leaty was fourth in the RoC Point Standings.
The leaders would hit lap traffic by the races 1/5th point as the top eight were spread out around the historic Holland highbanks. Patrick Emerling would go side by side with Hanbury for fourth place as Emerling, the current RoC points leader would move into fourth place on lap 23. Hossfeld would open up his lead over DeFebo and Potrzebowski to nearly a full straightaway by lap 25. The races second caution would come out on lap 36 as "the Rocket" Tommy Catalano would spin on the exit of turn two. Hossfeld, Emerling and a number of competitors went to the pits for quick adjustments, handing the lead to DeFebo with Potrzebowski, Hanbury, George Skora III and Matt Hirschman would be scored in the top five with Hossfeld coming back out in 11th place.
The lap 36 restart would see DeFebo and Potrzebowski make contact as Hanbury would take over second with Matt Hirschman running in third with Skora and defending race winner Andy Jankowiak running into the top five. Hirschman would take over second on lap 39 and would begin to chase down DeFebo as Skora got around Hanbury to take over third place. Tommy Catalano would come to a stop in turn two on lap 43 to bring out the third caution of the event. Roger Coss, winner of the last chance qualifier as well as Bryan Sherwood made pit visits during the caution period.
The mid-race restart would see DeFebo and Matt Hirschman lead the field as Skora, and Hanbury running in the top four as Potrzebowski and Jankowiak would battle for fifth place. At the halfway point, DeFebo, Hirschman, Skora, Jankowiak ,Daren Scherer, Hossfeld, Hanbury, Potrzebowski, Tommy Cloce and Brandon Oltra were scored in the top ten as RoC Starter John Nelson displayed the cross-flags. Oltra was on the move as he started in 26th place.
Karl Hehr, Roger Coss and Ricky Kluth came together on the back straightaway to slow the field down on lap 53. The pits saw plenty of activity during the lap 53 caution period as Hirschman, Jankowiak Hanbury, and Potrzebowski all saw the attention of their crews. The restart would see DeFebo, Skora and Hossfeld in the top three as Hossfeld went to work on Skora for second. Hossfeld would then go underneath Skora on lap 55 to take over second place. Hossfeld would then go underneath DeFebo and would regain the lead on lap 57. Skora and DeFebo would go side by side for second with Skora moving into the runner up spot on lap 59. Hossfeld would open up the lead on lap 60 as Skora, Scherer, Close and Oltra ran in the top five as Emerling, Bobby Holmes, Dave Wollaber, Tommy Catalano and Andy Jankowiak were running in the top ten.
Oltra would pass Cloce to move into fourth place on lap 65 and would go after third place Scherer. Dave Wollaber would spin on the back straightaway on lap 66 to bring out the caution. DeFebo would make his pit visit on lap 68 as did Matt Hirschman. The lap 72 restart would see Skora get around Hossfeld to take over the race lead. Ricky Kluth would come to a stop in turn four to bring out the caution on lap 75. Hossfeld would make an un-scheduled pit visit but rejoined the field.
The caution would come back out as early race leader Brian DeFebo got together in turn four with Karl Hehr and Jim Storace. The restart took place on lap 88 as Skora would "drop the hammer" first as Patrick Emerling would get around Oltra and Scherer to move into second place with Andy J following Emerling The red flag would come out on lap 91 as Tommy Cloce and TJ Potrzebowski would hit the back stretch wall and then Sam Fullone would make contact with Potrzebowski, and Potrzebowski would end up being on top of the Cloce machine. All drivers climbed out of their mangled machines under their own power.
The lap 92 restart saw Skora and Emerling go side by side with Emerling taking over the lead on lap 93 with Jankowiak passing Skora for second on lap 94. Emerling and Jankowiak would pull away from the rest of the field as Karl Hehr would bring out the caution for a spin on lap 96. The race would be called immediately after the caution due to time constraints. When the checkered flag was displayed, it was Emerling crossing the line first, earning his second RoC Modified Tour victory of the season. Andy Jankowiak would finish in second with George Skora III finishing in third. Hard Charger Brandon Oltra finished fourth and Tommy Catalano, after spinning on a couple of occasions would complete the top five finishers.
The next event for the Race of Champions Modified Tour will take place on Friday July 24 at the Spencer Speedway in Williamson, NY. The 35 lap feature event for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modifieds was led to the green flag by Patti Pruitt and Andy Nye with Nye jumping into the early lead over Pruitt with Amy Catalano, Bob Wilson and Shawn Nye racing in the top five. Catalano would take over second from Pruitt on lap four and Pruitt would then give up the third spot to Neil Dietz Jr just one lap later. Amy Catalano would then take over the lead on lap six from Nye. Scott Wylie would bring out the caution for spinning in turn four on lap nine. The restart would see Dietz take over the lead as Tommy Catalano would battle his mom Amy to take over second place. A multi-car spin in turn four would slow the field down once again on lap 11 as Alan and John Bookmiller along with Tim Nies would get together. Nies would get the worst end of the deal as the 74 machine needed a tow truck to get back to the pits. Dietz would jump back into the lead with the Catalano family battling with the Zacharias brothers as TJ and Jimmy would work their way into the top five. Jimmy would pass TJ to move into forth place as Amy Catalano would race by son Tommy to regain the runner up position as Neil Dietz Jr would open up his advantage. Bob Wilson would spin in the apex of turns three and four to bring out the caution. Jimmy Zacharias would work his way by the Catalano's to move into second and then went after Dietz for the lead. Zacharias would take over the lead in the late going as Tommy Catalano ran in third and challenged Dietz for second. Zacharias would pull away to earn his second win of the season. Tommy, Dietz, Catalano, and TJ Zacharias would complete the top five.
Tony Bilotte would lead from the drop of the green flag in the 25 lap feature for the Bank of Holland Chargers. Bilotte would open up his lead as Dave Vona and Mark Hoch as the lead trio would pull away from the rest of the field. Hoch would get around Vona for second before the mid-way point and would then start to chase down Bilotte. Hoch would be able to real in Bilotte and the two would put on a great battle for the lead with Bilotte answering every challenge that Hoch threw his way. The duo would make contact with Bilotte spinning into the infield and Hoch was able to take over the lead. Hoch would go on to celebrate his first win of the season over Vona and Tommy Wentland. Vona, who crossed the line in second failed post race inspection as did fourth place finisher Lexi Wilson.
Don Haskell and Mandie Orr led the field of 4 Cylinder Hornets to the green flag for their 20 lap main event with Orr jumping out into the early lead. Josh Hill would take over second with Kathie Ricketson and Timmy Catalano racing in the top four. With Orr out front, Timmy Catalano raced his way into second and was followed by Louis Carbone, Bob Bogner and Ben Russo. Catalano would take over the lead on lap 10 with Carbone passing Orr to move into second place. Carbone would begin to reel in Catalano as the leader would hit lap traffic on lap 12. With the top two pulling away, Ben Russo and Bob Bogner would put on a great battle for third place with Russo getting the final spot on the podium on lap 13. Catalano would pull away from Carbone and drove on to his first Holland feature of the season. Carbone, Russo, Bogner and John Blinston would complete the top five. Russo and Bogner were both found to be illegal in post-race tech.
Owen Bednasz and Nick Groff were on the front row for the main event for the Jerry Gradl Motors NYPA TQ Midgets with Groff taking off into the lead with Jonathan Reid, Kyle Hutchinson and Dave Wollaber quickly in the top four. Hutchinson would then get around Reid and Groff to take over the lead on lap five. Early leader Nick Groff would spin in turn four to bring out the caution on lap 10. The restart would see Hutchinson take off over Reid with Andy Nye and Dave Wollaber in the top four. Hutchinson would pull away from Reid, Andy Nye, Wollaber and Shawn Nye to earn his first win of the season on the highbanks.
News and Notes: 30 Race of Champions Modifieds signed into the pits with 27 taking the green flag for their feature event. Jimmy Zacharias did not take the green flag in his RoC racer after having issues with his motor. Several drivers did double duty throughout the night between the TQ Midgets, Pro Modifieds and the RoC Modifieds The Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex is participating with Ingersoll Rand's promotion involving the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Home Tracks. Ingersoll Rand is the official Power Tool of NASCAR and fans have the chance to win prizes from IR weekly by texting IRTOOLSHMC to 313131.
NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing will return on Saturday July 18 as it will be Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo Night. Portions of all ticket sales will be donated to Women and Children's Hospital. It will also be Mid-Season Championships for all of our divisions as the Pro Modifieds will be featured in twin 25 lap features (dependant on car counts). The Late Models, Chargers, Hornets, Future 4's, Figure 8's, TQ Midgets and the INEX Legends will fill the racing card. Grandstand gates will open at 4:45pm with the first qualifying race will take the green flag at 5:00pm. NASCAR feature racing will begin at 7:05pm.
