Saskatoon, SK- Auto Clearing Motor Speedway (August 8, 2015) - Race Results including Sky Financial Series – Unique Collision Centre 150.
The Sky Financial Series Unique Collision Centre 150 may have had top billing on the schedule Saturday at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway and it was one heck of a race, but it was the Saskatoon CrimeStoppers Bandoleros that had fans talking at the end of the night.
On the opening lap of the Bandolero feature, 14 year old Jaxen Gervais was clipped by two other cars going into corner one. The car caught an edge and barrel rolled down the track three times, before landing backo n its wheels. Fire, ambulance and safety crews rushed to the corner as you saw two thumbs up come out the now missing roof on the car.
Fans were instantly relieved, but not settled down until they saw Jaxen climb out of the tangled remains of the car and into the ambulance for a mandatory check. All other drivers were talked to, ensuring they were willing to go. All had smiles, so the race resumed with the #22 of Kelsey Toth coming out the eventual winner.
In an interview following the race, Jaxen compared the experience to being in a roller coaster going upside down, and being tackled by a rugby player at the same time. He was all smiles, though I'm sure he's hurting in some places he didn't even know existed today.
Jason Gervais, Jaxen's father and president of the SSCRA said he was pleased with how everyone responded to what was a terrifying moment in any parent's eyes. The right people responded and quickly, communication back to the parents was good and the aftercare was textbook.
Gervais says, "I'm happy everything we do around here revolves around safety, from the cars to the safety gear the drivers wear, to the safety teams and procedures we have in place. Any driver walking away from an accident like this is a huge relief and proof we have focused our priorities in the right areas."
Back to the Sky Financial Series where super late models from Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia made the trek to Auto Clearing Motor Speedway for the Unique Collision Centre 150, the second of four races in the series.
Alex Leschenko, driving his first SLM race in 10 years gets the jump from the pole in Dave Bone's #38 Proline Chevy, leading the way for the first eight laps. Scott Lucas didn't want any part of that though, himself driving in only his second SLM race, takes the lead over from Alex, keeping the #27 Northern Lights Casino Impala at the front until
the first caution in lap 29, when the #62 and #88 were sent to the back of the line for tangling.
Lucas got the jump on the restart, but a lap later the #09 of Clint Habart took over the front. The yellow flags flew again in lap 25 as Ryan Purdy turned the #24 Astro Towing Impala around, but Habart picked up where he left off go back to green, leading the field through lap 59.
A wobble out of the 09 though allowed Dean Braham in the #99 to take over the lead, followed by Lucas, then Crossman, Gaunt and Dusty O'Connell. Habart hot pitted for a right front tire change. He made it back out for another three laps but found the problem was more than a flat tire and he garaged the car for the night with 62 laps in the books.
Braham showed the way around the track for the next 15 laps when the #17and #79 brought out the caution. Lucas got the jump going back to green for the second half of the race, but it was a short lived lead. Braham took the lead for another three laps before the yellow lights were on again.
This time Gaunt got the jump, but Lucas wasn't done and went by Jim a lap later. Jim Gaunt wasn't giving up either, and he eventually took the #55 Sky Financial Chevy back into the lead in lap 111.
Meanwhile Howie Crossman had brought the #56 Cindy Moleski Photography Chev through the maze and was running in the top three and had been cruising along behind Jim Gaunt. He followed Jim around Lucas and was not sitting second.
Patience held out and Howie made is move in lap 128, taking over as the sixth leader of the race. Crossman, Gaunt and Lucas played cat and mouse for the last 22 laps of the race, where Crossman would have the fastest lap, then Lucas would, then Gaunt would, but the order on the track would not change.
In fact in the end Howard Crossman had a convincing win over Jim Gaunt, taking the checkered flag 2.058 seconds ahead of Jim. Lucas was 0.256 seconds off Gaunt's tail.
In the Earth Works Sask Legends Series, Blake Erb was the winner of the feature race in the #21 Rev'd Up Performance Ford Coupe, followed by the #2 of Kerry Neufeld and the 5A of AJ Morrison.
As mentioned earlier, the #22 of Kelsey Toth took home the CrimeStoppers Bandolero feature, followed across the line by the #18 of Tyler Emond and the #93 Burco Electric Bandolero of Ryley Schneider.
In Golf's Car Wash Street Stock action, Brennan Forseille continued his winning ways, taking another feature with the #28 Ghost Transportation Camaro, followed by the #3 BDI Canada Trans Am of Kevin MacLaggin and Mike Rea in the #18 Daou Auto Monte Carlo.
It's a short turn around as we're back to racing Wednesday night, with the Golf's Car Wash Mini Stocks and the Shell V-Power Sportsman joining the Tiger Automotive Pro Trucks. The Pro Trucks will be running the Family Pizza 75 lap feature.
Gates open at 6:00pm with the first 1500 people through the gates getting a coupon for a free Family Pizza. First green flag is at 7:05pm, Wednesday, August 12.
