@NASCARHomeTrack • Montréal, QC (August 31, 2015) - Alex Labbé was on his way to a solid Top Ten finish despite a slightly down-on-power engine in last Sunday's (August 30) Chevrolet Silverado 250, the penultimate round of the 2015 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, run at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Then with only a few laps remaining, two drivers who were having a crash fest of their own pushed Labbé into the wall and out of the race and into a 27th finishing position.
Starting from the seventh position after qualifying despite an engine that felt a little down on power, the St-Albert driver was able to keep his No 36 Lou's BBQ/VR Victoriaville/Mécanique industrielle MG Dodge in that position until the first caution period on lap 10. In fact, the loss of power was preventing him from gaining enough ground to pass those in front of him despite being quicker than them in the corners.
As he explained it, "The leaders would gain three or four car lengths on me on the back straightaway, and I could only close up on them in the corners and wait for an error to get by them. I could already see that I had the best handling car in the group."
Great execution during pit stops helped Alex stay in touch with the leaders right up until being run into the wall by two errand drivers having their own accident. After the race, Labbé was as close as we ever see him to being openly upset:
"The two bozos had been at it for several laps, and then they decided to settle it at the fastest place on the track, with walls on either side close to the track. This turned a stupid pushing match into a much bigger accident, and I had nowhere to go but into the wall where I destroyed my front suspension."
Despite his evident frustration after the race, the St. Albert racer could see the positive aspects of the weekend.
"The guys at Jacombs Racing gave me the best handling car ever."
Dave Jacombs was also impressed with the excellence of the car and driver combination. "Alex works really well with the team, then goes out and gets the maximum out of the car. He understands suspensions and communicates effectively with everyone. He really puts his head down and gets the job done, and the team members all really appreciate that kind of attitude."
Alex will be back on track on September 5, at the Montmagny Speedway, East of Québec City, for the Montmagny 150, a part of the ACT Québec Series.
