@OSCAARRacing • @Sunset_Speedway • Whitby, ON (June 9, 2015)- Many people will tell you that there is nothing as relaxing a good night's sleep in your own bed. Few things as comfortable as a long walk in a favourite pair of shoes.
After beginning the 2015 OSCAAR Super Late Model season wheeling another driver's equipment, Mike Beyore was back aboard his familiar #54 machine Saturday, June 6 at Sunset Speedway and the second generation standout from Whitby, Ontario felt like a kid in a candy store.
"It was a good opportunity to make the first show of the year with Jeff's car, but I can always be more confident pushing my own stuff a little harder than I would someone else's," said Beyore. "Working on the car through the week in the shop and on our way to the track, there was a different attitude from everyone on the team. I was really looking forward to getting out there to see what we could do with the changes that we'd made over the winter."
Beyore said the car needed several adjustments during the pre-race practice sessions, but was ready to go for the qualifying rounds. He started the first heat at the tail-end of the field, but was able to advance to fourth at the checkered flag. In the second preliminary, the driver known as 'The Whitby Warrior' took the green flag outside the front row and finished fourth. Back in the pit area, the crew performed a few more small adjustments and got ready for the feature event.
With 50 laps on the table, Beyore knew that he'd have to do the best he could with the equipment he had. Starting from the outside of the front row, he was hoping for the best and from the moment he hit the accelerator, that's exactly what he got. Taking the point from the start, until the first yellow with 10 laps complete, the veteran runner was smiling from ear to ear. On the restart, he was able to lead again until a couple of cars slipped past. From there, he settled into a rhythm and ran a comfortable pace behind the lead duo.
"It didn't make sense for me to push the issue," admitted Beyore. "I've been doing this long enough to know that when a couple of cars start fighting for the same spot, there's no telling what might happen. I wanted to stay close, but not so close as to get caught-up in someone else's mess."
It didn't take long for Beyore's prediction to become reality and when it did, he was able to get by on the inside line. In the late stages of the race, he was running door-to-door with another car following a restart with five laps to go and gave-up the lead, taking the checkered flag in the runner-up position.
"It would have been great to win, but there's no shame in second place," said a happy driver after the race. "I'll take where finished and being able to roll the car into the trailer any day. I want to thank my sponsors, crew, family and fans for all their support. I'm really looking forward to the next event on the schedule."
