@targanl • CLARENVILLE, NL (September 15, 2015) - A mixture of veterans and rookies are starting to take hold of their respective divisions in the 14th annual Targa Newfoundland.
Leg three started with rain, just like the previous two legs of the event. As the day continued, strong winds affected everything from the set-up teams preparing the stages, the support crews of the competitors, and the competitors themselves.
In the Open division of Targa, defending champion Mike Davenport of Ontario has a bit of catching up to do. He's currently in second place behind Jean Luc Bergeron of Quebec. Jean Luc A three-time Targa competitor, he enters the 2015 edition of the rally with unfinished business: He promised his long-time friend and crew member before he died last year that he would build and enter a car again in Targa. Winning Open division would be very special.
In Modern division, Targa veteran Stan Hartling is leading local the very competitive local rookie of Billy Anderson. Billy has been noticed by several of the top drivers in Targa and he is definitely someone to be watching over the final two days of the event.
In Classic division, Jack Rogers of Indiana and defending Classic champion, is once again at the top of the standings and is pulling away from his competitors.
In the Grand Touring Equipped division, defending champion and three time winner Craig MacMullen of Nova Scotia is leading with quite a large margin over second place Marinus Damm of Oregon.
In the Grand Touring Unequipped division, Carson Scheller in his first Targa has the lead over local entry Doug Kavanagh. These two rookies will certainly be battling it out over the final couple of days of the Targa.
Once again, back to the Bonavista Peninsula on Thursday's Leg Four. Competitors will certainly be pushing the limits to improve in the standings during the scheduled ten stages.
