Montréal (Québec), September 28, 2015.– Montreal driver Kuno Wittmer will contest this weekend's infamous endurance race the "Petit Le Mans", on the Road Atlanta track in Georgia. The driver from Montreal, last year's GT Le Mans class champion, will participate in the ten-hour race (about 1,000 miles) with the objective of claiming the win at the wheel of the TRG-AMR North America team's Aston Martin Vantage V12.
Winner of last January's 24 Hours of Daytona in a Dodge Viper GT3, entered in the GT Daytona class, Kuno Wittmer had to then miss the following four rounds before finding himself at the head of the TRG-AMR North America factory team.
"Winning the 24 Hours of Dayton was something I'll never forget. It was one of the most amazing wins of my career, but unfortunately after that, the Viper programme was completely stopped. Finding another team during the season isn't an easy thing do to, despite being 2014 GT Le Mans Champions, I had to work for several months before finding another interesting opportunity," explained Kuno Wittmer. He added, "The TRG-AMR North America team proposed that I drive for one race, the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen at the end of June. Seeing as everything went really well between all parties involved and we had great results; they offered me a contract for the rest of the season."
During the summer, Kuno Wittmer earned three consecutive podiums at the wheel of the Aston Martin Vantage V12, on the Lime Rock, Elkhart Lake and Virginia Raceway tracks. This enabled his Danish teammate, Christina Nielsen, to find herself at the top of the championship standings.
"Having missed four races, there was obviously no possible way for me to win the 2015 championship but helping Christina Nielsen win is an extremely motivating challenge," he indicated.
"Christina is a young driver with a lot of talent, she could become the very first female driver in history of the series to win the title if we win the "Petit Le Mans" this weekend," confided Kuno Wittmer.
Currently, the gaps are so tight at the top of the GT Daytona class championship that whichever team wins Saturday's race at Road Atlanta will automatically be crowned champion. In addition to the drivers' title for his teammate, the TRG-AMR North America team can also go for the team title.
"The "Petit Le Mans" is a long race, a real and difficult endurance race but it's also one I enjoy. To help my teammate and the entire team, the solution is simple, we have to win. We need to go flat out on every single lap and properly manage the traffic as well as the night-driving," explained Kuno.
This round, the last in the season for the United SportsCar Endurance series, will also be the last race in 2015 for Kuno Wittmer, before he announces his plans for the 2016 season.
"A lot of good things will be announced for 2016 but I prefer not to talk about it just yet but to instead focus on this Saturday's race. It's at the "Petit Le Mans" that I won my championship title last year, and I would really like to be able to provide another special moment like that for my team this time," concludes the Quebec driver.
The TRG-AMR North America team's Aston Martin Vantage V12 dons the number 007 and will have for this race, the re-enforcement of a third driver, American Brandon Davis, who will therefore complete the team with Kuno Wittmer and Christina Nielsen.
The start of the race, which will air on Fox Sports Racing, will take place on Saturday at 11:15am and continue for 10 hours of racing.
