@targanl • CLARENVILLE, NL (September 14, 2015) - A log jam at the top of the standings in all divisions of the 14th annual Targa Newfoundland after the first day of competition. Provisional results show at least eight vehicles tied in their respective classes within Targa and five tied in Grand Touring.
A majority of the competitors within the Targa division scored no penalties during the first day of competition. The ability of each team to maintain a perfect score throughout the first day is very impressive.
However, not all were so lucky. Several incidents knocked out a number of entries, some of them for the remainder of the event.
The Subaru of Lewis Bakes and Emilio Gavrielidis was withdrawn due to damaged incurred when it missed a turn on one of the afternoon stages. No injuries or property damaged occurred. The Subaru of Bradley Nullmeyer and Andrew Nullmeyer are trying to re-join the event after sustaining damage when they too missed a turn on the same stage. Once again, no injuries or property damage occurred. And the Mitsubishi of Barry Stewart and Matt Kratzmann are attempting to repair damage they sustained in a morning stage incident. No injuries or property damage occurred in that incident.
Mechanical issues have plagued the Porsche of Tom Megan and Steve Hart, to the point they have decided to withdraw their classic vehicle, reducing the Grand Touring division by one. And the Fast Tour entry of Robert Teichrob and Marshall Teichrob has yet to even attempt a stage due to mechanical issues with their BMW. They are hoping to be on the start line by Tuesday afternoon.
The second day of active competition will focus on the northern Burin Peninsula. With heavy rain in the forecast, teams will have to deal with wet roads conditions. The standings after Tuesday's stages will certainly look different with some help from the weather.
Owned and operated by Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa motorsports events in the world. The 2015 competition started in Torbay on September 13 and concludes back in St. John's on September 18. The annual rally will cover more than 1,600 kilometers of the challenging, twisty roads of the central and eastern portion of Newfoundland, including more than 400 kilometers of closed-road, flat-out Targa stages.
