Mother Nature Having Her Say on Leg 2 of Targa Newfoundland

@targanl • CLARENVILLE, NL (September 15, 2015) - Heavy rains and poor road conditions met the crews as they started Leg 2 of competition in the 14th annual Targa Newfoundland.

Heavy rain continued into Tuesday with all stages having to reduced speeds in order to maintain safety in the harsh conditions.  This reduction in speed and increase in allowed time meant competitors started to separate themselves from one another in the standings.

Ontario's father and son teammates John Hume Sr. and John Hume Jr. are tied with local entry Billy Anderson and several other competitors for top spot in the Modern division of Targa.   In Classic division, the defending champs of Jack Rogers and C.J. Strupp of Indiana, U.S.A. are once again at the top of that division.  And in Open division, it seems to be a three way battle between returning champion Mike Davenport,  Scott Robbins, and Mark Rittenhouse, all from Ontario.

The weather did not allow for the Grand Touring division to have any major separation of those competitors, with several members still bunched together.

Tomorrow's  Leg 3 will occur on the Bonavista Peninsula.  Last year's stages on the peninsula were outstanding, with many competitors commenting on the beauty of the area and the support of the local fans.

Owned and operated by Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa motorsports events in the world.  The 2015 competition will start in Torbay on September 13 and concludes back in St. John's on September 18.  The annual rally will cover more than 1,600 kilometers of the challenging, twisty roads of the central and eastern portion of Newfoundland, including more than 400 kilometers of closed-road, flat-out Targa stages.
